When to File a CFPB Credit Reporting Complaint

September 11, 2026 - by Credit Climb editorial - 4 min read

The CFPB generally expects you to dispute with the reporting company first and wait until the dispute is no longer pending.

Start at the source

Dispute the error with the bureau and furnisher. Save confirmation numbers, letters, attachments, delivery records, and results.

Do not duplicate a pending case

The CFPB says consumers should not submit a credit-reporting complaint while the dispute is still active. Check the current complaint instructions before filing.

Build a clean complaint

State the company, account, exact reporting error, what you already sent, how the company responded, and the resolution you want. Attach the smallest set of decisive records.

Keep expectations realistic

A complaint routes the issue to the company and creates a record. It does not guarantee deletion or a score increase.
