Is a Credit Card Annual Fee Worth It?

September 11, 2026 - by Credit Climb editorial - 4 min read

Compare benefits you actually use with the fee, then consider a product change before closing an old account.

Use real value

Count statement credits, rewards, insurance, and perks only at the value you reliably use. Ignore benefits that change your spending.

Check the renewal date

Review the current benefit terms and fee before renewal. Product features can change from the year you opened the card.

Ask about alternatives

A retention offer or no-fee product change may preserve the account and limit without paying for unused perks. Get the new terms in writing.

Closing tradeoffs

Closing can reduce available credit and raise utilization. That does not mean paying a bad fee forever; it means checking the math first.
