How to Dispute a Credit Card Billing Error
Billing-error rights under the Fair Credit Billing Act are separate from credit-report disputes. Written notice timing matters.
Check the category
Billing errors can include unauthorized charges, wrong amounts or dates, goods not accepted or delivered as agreed, and missing credits. A quality complaint alone may use a different process.
Protect the 60-day window
To use federal billing-error protections, send written notice to the billing-inquiries address generally within 60 days after the statement containing the error was sent.
Pay the undisputed amount
You can withhold the disputed amount during the investigation, but keep paying undisputed charges and required amounts. Follow current CFPB instructions.
Keep the packet
Save the statement, letter, receipts, merchant messages, and delivery proof. A card dispute does not automatically fix separate credit-report reporting.
Organize report items, draft DIY letters, track deadlines, and calculate utilization.
