Debt Settlement Letter Checklist
Before paying a settlement, get the account, amount, deadline, remaining balance, and reporting terms in writing.
Identify the obligation
The letter should identify the collector, current creditor, original creditor when relevant, and account reference.
Define the money
State the total claimed balance, exact settlement amount, payment deadline, accepted payment method, and whether the rest will be forgiven.
Define completion
Ask what status the collector will report, whether it will stop collection, and when it will send confirmation. A settlement does not automatically delete accurate history.
Save proof
Keep the signed agreement, payment record, and zero-balance or satisfaction confirmation. Review later reports for accurate balance and status updates.
