How Long Do Negative Items Stay on a Credit Report?

September 11, 2026 - by Credit Climb editorial - 4 min read

Many negative items can generally be reported for seven years, while bankruptcies can have longer limits. The date rules depend on the item.

Common period

Late payments, collections, and many other negative items generally have a seven-year reporting period under federal law.

Bankruptcy

A bankruptcy can generally remain for up to ten years, depending on the chapter and bureau treatment.

Date accuracy matters

A collector changing hands should not create a new original-delinquency date. Review the date of first delinquency and related status fields.

Expiration is not payment

Credit-report removal does not decide whether a debt is legally owed or whether a lawsuit is time-barred. Those are separate questions.
